A new book on the word, written by Professor Daniel J. Zelman, suggests that the meaning of the word has changed over the years and that the term has entered the realm of fiction.
Dr Zelman said that while the word was originally used in the 18th century to describe tales of supernatural occurrences, he believes that it has come to be associated with fairy tales.
The term fairy tale is the preferred term for the work that has been produced in recent years by a group of artists, historians and writers who were inspired by the tales.
